We are cultural and media activists with a devotion to justice and peace. We have created a new, progressively motivated organization to provide unfiltered and non-censored voice and visibility to the issues, expression, culture and politics of young people around the world. We see media and culture as an important and untapped tool for social change.

While a student at UC Berkeley, Kamel became involved with Critical Resistance panel on juvenile justice issues for their first nationwide conference and was West Coast Marketing Director for BLU, a conscious hip-hop magazine. During this time, Kamel was a key organizer in successful events, such as the Tupac One Nation concert and conference and the first Black August hip-hop benefit on the West Coast.
Kamel represented his district on San Francisco Board of Supervisors’ Youth Commission. There he worked closely with attorney James Bell on a groundbreaking program to reform the juvenile justice process in San Francisco and nationwide. During this period, he began public relations work with politically conscious hip-hop group, Dead Prez, with whom he continues to work. Kamel has worked with progressive organizations such as Black August, a project of Malcolm X Grassroots Movement; the Prison Moratorium Project; and the Victory Gardens Project. In 2003, Kamel accepted a Postgraduate Fellowship from the Soros Foundation to launch a project in collaboration with anti-prison activists around the nation called “It’s Bigger Than Hip Hop.” This innovative project is designed to generate critical consciousness through media around the issue of mass imprisonment of urban youth of color. |
